In my interview with Jack Etkin of Citizen's Forum (I added the video below) last week we both agreed that a good definition of "fascism" (and one that Mussolini provided) was "corporatism" combined with "authoritarianism" . We see that today in the neo-fascism that is prevalent in parts of the world.
Jack provided the great example of the funding of Hitler by the Bush family, for instance, that began as Hitler started to gain power. He encouraged the audience to Google "Bush" + "Hitler" + "Guardian" to see the Guardian article that makes this link.
I also added in Catholicism.
In Franco's Spain, it was the combination of fascism and Catholicism that united the Nationalists against the Republicans. Franco was engaged in a "cruzada" or crusade against his perceived "infidel" and in this he was emulating the earlier crusade of Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand who, along with their Inquisitors, ultimately destroyed the last vestiges of Arab rule in Spain.
If you think about it, the combination of fascism and a religion like Catholicism is a powerful one. The state crushes you and wipes out all opposition and the church keeps you docile and compliant.
One must always be careful when one listens to the edicts of the Church at any time, and especially when it is married to an authoritarian state. Its' claims that it speaks from the mind of God is patently false as the teachings of the Master Jesus have been defiled and twisted to dark ends many times in history up to the present day.
When faced with this kind of authoritarianism, it is better to go into the only holy temple that we all have, our own Sacred Hearts.
This was the message of Jesus all along "The Kingdom (and let us add Queendom) of Heaven lies within us.
Don't let anyone or any organization tell you otherwise.
