I think that deception or "untruths" are being uncovered far more thoroughly and quickly than they have before. It's almost as though the vested interests of the past, the power brokers who tried to wield their own agenda and feel confident doing so as they believed that a largely docile and stupid population would never question them, have become the dinosaurs and the laughing stock in a new age of transparency and honesty.
Let's take the muzzling of scientists as an example, a fairly rampant practice here in Canada as the federal government seeks to control and monitor, indeed manipulate, the information that goes out to the public, not to act necessarily in a paternalistic and caring manner, but to largely protect and preserve their corporate interests.
A couple of days ago the CBC ran an article about a survey that was conducted by the Environics Research Group at the request of the Professional Institute of the Public Service in Canada, the body that represents scientists in 40 federal departments and agencies. The findings are interesting and can be downloaded from their website (http://www.pipsc.ca/portal/page/portal/website/issues/science/bigchill).
It highlights an issue that has been simmering in this country for a couple of years now, that of the absolute insistence by the current federal government that no scientist be allowed the right to speak directly to the media on any issue without government sanction. In effect, government policy has overridden science in very critical areas that should be of concern to all of us.
But why would they feel the need to silence these men and women? What news could they convey to us that needs to be censored by the government? Who are they protecting? Whose interests? Canadians? Our overall health and well being, the well being of the environment? Or are they protecting the lobbyists from industry who have their own agenda? I think it's time we found out.
An example mentioned in the report is as follows: an earthquake occurs under one of our seas, and rather than the media going to the scientists themselves they are forced to go to the government- sanctioned news people who have the authority to respond instead. But will lives be lost in the interim?
How about a train derailment like the one that occurred just recently close to Edmonton? What is the truth behind the noxious fumes and the toxicity that has been released into the atmosphere? Why are we not privy to knowing the dangers? Importantly, why is the community of 100 souls who live close by the derailment not being given full information? What is being hidden?
We are living in an environment where this type of covert secrecy is no longer acceptable, or even possible. Social media not only allows marketers and government insights into our potential behaviors but it allows us to watch them as well. We need to kick over the stones of hidden truth and half tales and demand a full and proper accounting. We need to take our power back. We need to demand the truth, we are supposedly living in a democracy after all. Aren't we? Then let the full and complete might of democracy prevail.
Not the agenda of the governments and their elites to the exclusion of those who voted them into power.
