I have been thinking of the sacredness of trees and how they are a perfect metaphor for us at this time of transition, rooted into the earth as they are, yet with branches that reach up to the heavens.
We are unique sacred beings: born of heaven and earth, Spirit in human form, enjoying both the beauty of the earth whilst being made of the same substance as the Angels and therefore imbued with the same ability to live in reverence and praise, and in deep communion with Divine Source, if we so choose.
Now that I am back on the west coast, I am being connected back into the sacred traditions of the First Peoples. Their wonderful art that also reflects their awareness of themselves and all of life around them as a beautiful union of heaven and earth. In fact, theirs is an ancient belief system of reverence that is rooted into their way of life as well.
I think of their totems, now that they are everywhere around me, and I reflect on the fact that these wonderful structures are also trees in many ways, carved as they are from a single tree in grace and harmony, and supplication.
Like the trees, they are rooted into the earth, and with their sacred symbols of the earth and sky, reach heavenward.
There is one totem that I love, just on the other side of Granville Island on the walkway by the sea. It is very old and is of a man with his arms stretched out to the sky, his eyes lifted upward, the symbols of the earth carved into the totem pole below him.
And I believe, strongly, that this is a signpost for all of us.
