There is an interesting body of thought that states the Earth was decimated in a cataclysm between 9500- 13,000 years ago which saw, as Plato described, the sinking of Atlantis into the sea.
The comet that hit the earth at that time led to the rising of simultaneous myths from all over the world describing a "great flood" that swept away all before it: these stories come to us from China, Turkey, in what is now Iran, South America, North America, and within the biblical stories of Noah.
After the flood, other stories started to emerge of visitors arriving into certain parts of the world and assisting the people to build a new society. They also assisted them in the construction of great megaliths and pyramids, all symmetrically aligned to the constellations and to the summer and winter solstice. The pyramids of the Olmec and the ancient Incans, for instance, bear a remarkable resemblance to the pyramids of Egypt using a form of construction that we could not replicate today. The symbols on each pyramid are also similar, and there is a consistent image of seven bearded figures built into these structures, who were called "the Watchers."
An insightful book that goes into great detail about this is Magicians of the Gods, by Graham Hancock,
These teachers and watchers were not only described as bearded. They were also white. You can see them as well in the remnants of Easter Island. When I was in Peru a few years ago, I studied the myths and legends about the creation of the Incan Empire. A central figure in this creation story was Viracocha, blond and bearded with emerald eyes who rose from Lake Titicaca after the "flood that swept the earth". There were many theories as to who he was, and many believed that he came from Atlantis. He had the disk of the sun god wreathed like serpents around his arms and he gave meticulous instruction to the Incans as to how they should form their new world.
In fact, tall, bearded watchers (there were generally seven of them) are described in monuments in Turkey, Egypt and South America all built in a time just after the flood, almost as signposts from the past, and perhaps warnings as well.
Atlantis, many believe, was real. It was a far more advanced society than ours, and very enlightened. At the time of its demise, however, it had become corrupted. Hubris, greed, cruelty and hatred swept the society, the sacred became profane. The material was vaunted over the spiritual.
It is said that these sacred monuments left to us by the Watchers are a form of communication that serve both as a record, and as a warning.
