On July 4th as President Trump was positioning his tanks and other military hardware in front of a "White" House that once stood for a leadership that was humane and kind, I wrote into the New York Times.
They had posted an article on this show of military "might" and invited comments. Never one to overlook an opportunity like this, I wrote in and asked if anyone else could see parallels between this "theater of the absurd" and the parades in Hitler's Germany, Stalin's Soviet Union, Putin's Russia and elsewhere.
I said that patriotism becomes a virulent disease when it is wrapped in a tattered and torn flag and besmirched by the highest office in the land.
I ended by saying that perhaps the US could show true leadership once more through decency, humanity, wise conservationism, and through looking after the vulnerable, especially those that come to their shores looking for safe haven.
I forgot about the email until I heard back from the Times saying that my comment had been approved. Further, they named it as a "Times Pick". By mid day, over 500 people had recommended my comment. By the end of the day over 1000 had. I was stunned. I was also stunned by the comments that ensued from people in the US, Canada, Holland and New Zealand, among others. I had clearly hit a pulse.
One man in the US told me to stay out of their domestic affairs. As soon as he posted this many others came in, mostly from the US and said,"Bud she has the right to interfere, we are part of a global community. Plus, look where her country is sitting."
By far, the majority of people wrote comments that asked that we never give up on them, that I was right, that they were edging towards fascism.
One person from the US pointed out that they were never humane and kind, and that the Declaration of Independence was created by slave owners. He is right, George Washington was one of the biggest of them.
Another woman pointed out that the majority of people did not vote this administration in, and of course she is right. Hillary Clinton won by over 3 million votes, and that number would have been higher had certain forces not illegally intervened.
Hillary also said that she was the only thing standing between the US and the Apocalypse, and while some of us may disagree with the vernacular she is presenting, the vernacular of the "elite", all things considered, she is probably right.
