I am reading a novel about a time of enchantment and mystery that takes place in the Languedoc area of France, the land of the Cathars and the Templars. The land of secrets.
It takes place after the great war in a time when beauty was sought once more: beauty, love, goodness, stability, all of the qualities lost during the horror of war. When the final price that was paid was a loss of illusion about the goodness of humanity in the face of the inhumanity and cruelty shown one to the other.
A young girl gets lost in a labyrinth on the grounds of a chateau. She fled there in search of peace. For a moment she panics, turns this way and that, uncertain as to which direction she should turn. She is, however gifted with second sight and so she calms herself, takes a few steadying breaths and closes her eyes. She allows her spirit to soar above the labyrinth until she has a complete understanding of its intricacies, and treacheries. And then, with the force of her spirit and her sight, she finds her way out again.
I believe that this is a perfect metaphor for our lives right now. The chaos around us will only lead us to more chaos, or tie us to the chaos of others. It is only our spirits and our second sight, which we all have as a natural birthright, that will lead us out of the labyrinth of uncertainty and fear so prevalent right now.
