I just returned from Cambodia and Laos, countries of immense beauty, and immense sorrow.
In Phnom Penh, we visited the killing fields where Pol Pot (not his real name, as he changed it to represent the abbreviated form that meant “Political Potential”) killed millions of men, women and children from 1975-1979 in his purge of an elite that stood in the way of his realization of a Cambodian communist regime. In this savagery, he followed Mao perfectly, and Stalin. There are many mass graves in Cambodia. We visited one within the city itself.
I had a strong sense of what I would experience there and so I prepared myself as much as I could. I have visited other sites of mass killings before, and knew that unresolved issues surrounding the plight of the victims would never go away until true healing occurred. I alluded to this in my book The Poet and the Angel, where the spirit of slain poet Federico Garcia Lorca could not leave Granada until he experienced redemption as he, too, was unceremoniously slaughtered and left in a mass grave.
A complicit pact was made between the Spanish dictator, Franco, and the people to forget this era in exchange for prosperity and stability. A collective amnesia resulted, one that overlooked the writhing of the spirits in mass graves in Spain that have still to be uncovered.
The same condition exists in Cambodia as one of Pol Pot’s former generals is running the government. In spite of the war crimes tribunal set up at the Hague which led to a couple of convictions, this man seems to have escaped the same kind of scrutiny.
When we entered the killing fields barely a week ago I encountered a level of distress, sorrow, and immense darkness that I have not experienced before. It washed over me in waves almost to the point that I lost my balance through disorientation. Others with me felt the same agitation, and some started to cry.
I knew that I had ultimate protection with me, through Archangel Michael and the Angelic realm. I have always associated butterflies with the presence of Angels and on that day, butterflies followed me as I spun through the trajectory of this space, praying intensely for divine healing to enter.
I felt an answer to these prayers immediately. It was almost as though a great tunnel of Light open above me. I felt this Light flow through me and enter into the earth beneath my feet. In this moment, I became a conscious pillar of Light, and a conduit for the Divine to flow through me.
I will not commit to paper the extent of the terrible tragedy that occurred to the people of this country, as that ties into the darkness that precipitated the genocide, one that the western world largely turned a blind eye to. Pol Pot was a communist, after all and the concept of humanitarian intervention into the affairs of those states who are murdering their own people lay in the future.
But I will commit to paper the power that each of us has as a Human-Divine Being. Had I not experienced the flood of Light entering the earth that day, I would never have understood the full implications of our power to counter darkness with immense Light and Love, and Healing.
We are the bridge between Heaven and Earth.
