Grace continued, "Have you ever read the Brothers Karamazov by Dostoevsky?

Jenna nodded.

"Remember the part about the Grand Inquisitor?  It is set in the 15th century when the fires of the Inquisition are raging throughout Spain.  Christ has returned to earth and stands accused before the Grand Inquisitor for bringing too much freedom and responsibility to humankind.  'The people cannot accept the message you have brought them,' the Grand Inquisitor tells him, 'because it implies personal responsibility and freedom.  That is something they can't handle. They need us,' he tells Christ.  'They need the church, because we are the hen and they are the chicks. We take a great burden from them by telling them what to do so they don't have to worry about making those choices themselves.  They will never accept your message,' he goes on, 'because it frightens them, and so we must kill you again in order for your message to die completely.'  Then he consigns Christ to the executioner and the stake.  Jenna, be careful!  You are in your infancy.  You have much to learn, and endure.  Do not speak until it is time for you to do so.  There is nothing more dangerous than an injured animal that is cornered."
