The police forces in Saudi Arabia arrested a woman today who had the bravery and temerity to appear in public in garb that the rest of us as women wear all the time. She displayed her midriff and legs in a violation of the country's dress code for women.
Quelle horreur!
Please understand that I respect the path that Muslim women take, and I sincerely hope that it is a personal path and not one invoked by a dying and repressive patriarchy.
Saudi Arabia has such a regime: it is hard to believe that western governments kowtow to a stone age culture where their treatment of women begins and ends at the cave.
It is not enough to say that "it is not our problem", that they have cultural sovereignty over their affairs. If one woman is stoned or repressed in a stone age culture, it becomes all of our concern. Not speaking out signifies acceptance.
