Solstice is one of the days when the priests and priestesses of ancient times, who loved the Great Mother, celebrated this passage of the Earth from one season to the other with great reverence. It was a holy day and one which promised an ensuing plenitude through the fecundity of the Earth, with great abundance for all .
Of course, this reverence for the Earth, its seasonal rituals, occurred before the rise of patriarchal religions, with its emphasis on the domination and the subjugation of the Earth.
I think it is a tremendous irony that in North America at least this sacred day is also when we hold "Father's Day".
Of course we do celebrate the re-unification of our feminine and masculine selves, we celebrate and embrace the feminine within the masculine.
The time that we are living in, this sacred time of Ascension is, after all, about the return of the Goddess, it is about returning to balance once again.
But it behooves us to reflect on the fact that the "Holy of Holies" is the sacred space where Creation comes to fruition, and this is within the womb of the Mother alone.
