I am in the midst of this massive tome on Russia, part historical fiction intertwined with actual historical events. I absolutely love reading history and I do so with the knowledge that a lot of it has been "re-mastered" by vested interests; however, the existence of certain historical facts and figures in history are indisputable. IE, Ivan the Terrible, Peter the Great, The Empress Catherine, The Romanovs...and the throwing off of the Nazis in World War 11.
The terrible treatment of the peasantry and their ultimate rise.
Historical fiction adds in the muse of the writer and in the case of Edward Rutherford, it is a masterful Muse indeed..
Before we cast stones at the situation in Russia and the Ukraine, it is important to understand the rich and varied backdrop to the evolution of these countries, and how they have been intertwined from the very beginning.
As has Iran. This country, ancient, has a long history with the country that eventually became Russia.
No conflict can arise out of a vacuum and once you understand the history of the players, the "AH-HA" moments will begin.
In an overall sense, I am awed by the progress and evolution of the Russia itself, pooh-pooed by the elites of Europe during the Renaissance.... for a while... until they rose in might and grandeur and produced some of the world's most magnificent writers, artists composers and scientists As have the Ukraine, long resistant to Russia's hegemony, incorporated, and then made independent once again.
