I am a glider pilot, and although I have not flown for a little while now, I used to soar with other pilots in the thermals of Alberta. It was a wonderful feeling: being in a craft that relied on the winds came as close as I could imagine to flying like a bird. Indeed, these exquisite sailplanes were so well crafted that they could fly on their own if left to their freedom.
In the fall the weather conditions for glider pilots changed and we went from thermals to wave soaring. What that meant was that you flew straight into the wind and, catching the wave, your glider would rise like a helicopter, quickly.
I feel strongly that we are in wave conditions now.
