In the newspaper this morning we read that the Royal Ontario Museum is dismantling a blue whale carcass that inconveniently washed up onto the shores of Newfoundland. This whale, part of a species that is the largest in the world, is in a state of decline. Its number are not returning, and scientists the world over are trying to figure out why.
The blue whale is the silent sentinel of the oceans. It points the way towards what is happening in the ocean's food chain overall. Its decline, and the decline of other whales species, should be a source of great alarm to all of us, as the oceans hold the key to our longevity on the planet.
No whales = no Earth, it's a simple equation.
