I am reading a fascinating book by Gregg Braden called The Science of Self-Empowerment : Awakening the New Human Story, (2019).
Its' premise is that Darwin was wrong. Further, even Darwin thought Darwin was wrong and please note that his entire evolutionary theory of you, me and us was based solely upon avian studies he conducted in the Galapagos.
Nevertheless this is a theory we have clung to with great tenaciousness, to our overall demise I believe.
No, we are not descended from Neanderthals, although they were in existence at the same time that WE came into being about 200,000 years ago. The DNA of our true ancestors matches our DNA perfectly and reflects not an animalistic strain of "survival of the fittest" in a competitive, snarling world of conflict, war and brutal cruelty, but a species of extraordinary complexity, one capable of inner reflection, intuition, empathy, compassion, self-healing and love.
Well that changes things, quite a bit.
We have based our entire society, our culture, our way of extending antipathy and war -like behavior towards the "other" on a model that came right out of Darwin's thesis. In business as well as in relations between countries, religions and cultures.
But if this model is wrong, then that leaves us with no alternative but to deeply search within to find out precisely who we are. And to reflect that we are far more enlightened than we have been led to believe. And far more complex.
And we do this self-searching at the entry level to the next great evolutionary leap that we are ALL going through, unprecedented in every way, right now.
