I have been working on a re-write of my book A Song of Songs: Mary Magdalene Awakes, but I have put it aside for now.
My novella, The Poet & the Angel has been dominating my attention instead. It is a fantasy novel about slain poet and Spain's man of letters, Federico Garcia Lorca.
Lorca was executed by the fascists in August 1936 at the onset of the Spanish Civil War. His body was put into a mass grave and it has never been found. Along with the thousands of other bodies from that horrific war, all paved over by the collective amnesia of the people of Spain, until recently.
When the fascist general signed Lorca's death warrant he said he was having him killed because his words were more dangerous than 10,000 guns. Lorca was outspoken against the fascist regime and the Catholic Church's involvement with that regime at the highest levels.
We are living in a time of incipient fascism, and this includes fascism in those countries where we think that democracy holds sway. Make no mistake: had Hitler gained access to the atomic bomb, as he came close to doing and won the war, I would not be penning this note, and "freedom" would be a term we would read about in our ancient myths.
This rise that I am seeing around the world, the increasing power of the "strongmen" must be countered by all that is good, just, and honorable. We must collectively say no to a system that is for the select few at the expense of the rest of us, and move towards a brighter world, for the highest good of all.
This is why I am bringing Federico Garcia Lorca back to life.
