After the fall of the Twin Towers when all of us were trying to find our friends in lower Manhattan, posters began appearing like snow on the benches and the streets of Washington Square: Have you seen my son, this is my daughter, have you seen her, my husband may be wandering the city in shock, can you help me to find him......the paroxysms of grief, shock and disbelief that held us all in its embrace.
About a week after the tragedy I had a dream about Kali. I was on my way to work and one of my associates stopped me in the street and told me that she was going to pray to Kali, and she wanted me to come. I entered her temple with its smoke and fire, and endless swirling, dark energy.
Kali is known as the Goddess of Destruction. She is seen with garlands of skulls around her neck and a fierce and merciless countenance. It seemed appropriate that I dreamt of her after the destruction in what was then my city.
But I came to realize later, and this came to me in a trip to India, that this is only part of the story, and that Kali is one of the Goddesses that is gravely misunderstood. Destruction of all that is unbalanced and of the ego, which is the only dark power that exists in the universe and will destroy us if we allow it to, is necessary so that new life can begin: new hope, new dreams, a new world. Kali appears when we have reached a tipping point so much so that our current path is untenable. She guides us through the destruction into a brighter world beyond.
I believe that Kali is very much with us right now.
