How did the Catholicism fall so short of Jeshua's teachings?

I am an avid student of history and in the two novels that I have written, the Catholic Church looms large.

This is a depiction of "Saint" Dominic, who later went on to form the Dominican order, presiding over an auto-da-fe.  In fact Dominic was charged by the Pope of the day to establish the Inquisition so that the "heresy" of the Cathars in the Languedoc region of France could be quelled.

I traveled into the Languedoc to research the myths and legends of Mary Magdalene for my first novel.  I was also there to dig deeper into the Catholic crusade against the Cathars, or the "Pure Ones" who preached a gospel that implied a direct connection to God, rendering the Church irrelevant.

A direct connection that Jeshua also preached.

The auto-da-fe was the torture and death of heretics at the hands of the Catholic Church and the Inquisition.  It was a cruelty so extreme that later authoritarian fascist regimes in our recent memory emulated these methods with great enthusiasm.

How could this have happened?  How could you take the loving and pure message of a great Master and turn this into an instrument of diabolical inhumanity?  Further, how does an institution of this nature pay off its great karmic debt?

How, in this Ascension time, does the ship of Catholicism turn itself around?  Can it?

"Myths and legends" are created to "explain the explainable"
Creation stories, and their protagonists for example, abound throughout worldly cultures since time immemorial.
Some years ago in Boston, I found myself standing in front of Paul Gauguin's post impressionist masterpiece, Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going?
I was in deep study of Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau at the time.
With such complexities of reason, cognition and the avid lucidity, should we not be asking why Homo sapiens are so genetically bound to fabricate fantastical explanations to these impossible mythic questions?
