The world we live in is marked by duality, by polar opposites, the "them versus us" scenario, "they are either with us or against us" dictum and so on. We have seen this in evidence for many years. We are like stars falling from the night sky and descending into the egoistic abyss that causes us to peer at each other over an unbreachable divide.
Nowhere is this more evident that in the "good versus evil" equation, or God versus Satan.
Of course, people tend to forget that "good versus evil" and "God versus Satan" are concepts that reside within us as we make choices every day as to which thought to have, how to act, which choices to make, and so on.
I've heard it said by someone very wise in these matters that Satan does not in fact exist as an entity at all, but our thoughts do. And when these thoughts are disconnected from our sacred hearts they can become very vicious indeed, especially when they are couched in "good acts" or in "acts of God", however so defined. This is when they are the most insidious.
We have some great examples in history to prove this point. Here are a few:
- The thoughts of the people of Germany in the Second World War when they gave their power to a dictator who destroyed their Jewish neighbors and friends without impunity.
- The thoughts of a person like Stalin who murdered millions, or Pol Pot who committed the same form of genocide against his own people.
- The thoughts of the crusaders and Roman Catholic Church as they took back Jerusalem from the Arabs and wantonly murdered the entire population of men, women and children in the name of Jesus Christ while in comparison, the Arabs saved the entire population of Jerusalem when they conquered and left the churches and places of worship intact.
- The thoughts of white supremacists who enslaved and brutalized people of color to serve their needs, treating them worse than animals and teaching them that God is white and that they, black, are forever evil.
- The thoughts of men who presumptuously assert themselves upon women, who rape them, degrade and abuse them in the mistaken belief that they are superior and that this is their "divine" perogative.
- The thoughts of priests who praise God and who lift the host high into heaven and then mercilessly abuse little children leaving them broken in spirit and permanently damaged.
- The thoughts of a government who looks at the vulnerable as economic equations and slices and dices a budget to exclude them in favor of the rich, leaving them even more vulnerable than they were before.
- The thoughts of anyone from any gender, race, or religious persuasion who actually thinks they are better than their brothers and their sisters and believe that others exist solely to serve them and that further, they have received this knowledge from God himself.
- The thoughts that anyone has God's ear more than anyone else.
All of these thoughts, all of this evil, is Satan. But there is no grotesque, horrible one-off creature to blame this on.
There is only the human mind, separated from the sacred human heart, where God dwells.
