There seems to be a thought out there that if one subsumes one's will to the will of the Divine then all kinds of calamitous things happen, and one becomes enslaved.
I had a professor of philosophy who feared that he would have to crucify his intellect, a part of his persona that was very important to him, if he allowed Divine Will to prevail.
First of all, I believe that free will is sacrosanct, and we always have the choice to allow this to prevail, in every circumstance.
I personally find that when I allow Divine Will to prevail, I am actually more free. I don't feel enslaved at all. In fact, I find myself rising up to be the best that I can be, as the Creator intended, a perfect Jennifer as it were.
And this brings me great joy and peace, great exultation and abundance, in the truest sense of that word.
I think that enslavement results when free will prevails at the expense of Divine Will. Because then you are left to the vicissitudes of ego, and are vulnerable to the things of the material world: a worry about what others think of you, a constant gnawing of inner dissatisfaction that you are not good enough, a constant feeling of competitiveness in a society that pits one being against another . You are left to the whims of a cruel master who looks at you solely as an economic equation and then eliminates you once you've served your purpose, detritus on the shore of his, or her own ego. You are also left prey to those institutions who operate from a lower, primitive, fear-based energy and who target the weak.
I personally prefer to be the very best that I AM. It's not easy, but the rewards are incalculable.
