They both got onto the bus in the heart of the vibrant metropolis of a gleaming city, each wrapped in the mists of their own experiences.
One woman sat close to the front of the bus. There were not many people traveling to the ocean that day, but she sat there contented and at peace, a smile on her face.
The second woman brushed past the others on the bus as she moved down the aisle. There were deep lines on her face. "Deep worry and regret" thought the first woman. The second woman sat close to the back of the bus and before they left the bus terminal she had turned on her phone and started berating her lover, a man named John.
Of course, her voice carried and so everyone on the bus became privy to their lives, the sadness and the misery, the deep distrust and the anger, the endless wanting. It was like a buzz of angry, attacking wasps.
Soon though, the bus left the city. The first woman marveled at the sky. She had never seen anything this lovely. White, billowing cumulus clouds, a huge Angel wing cloud that covered half the sky, cloud sculptures and beauty everywhere! Of course she knew that God did not create this for her, She created this for anyone who happened to be looking up into the sky at that moment.
The first woman was distracted for a moment by the incessant buzzing of anger from behind her and so she turned in her seat. The second woman was not looking at the sky. She was hunched down in her seat, her brow furrowed, and her face dark and withering. She was now talking to John about how angry she was that he had closed down their back account and how could he do this to her, when they had such love between them! The first woman did not want to hear this but she knew that she was living in a world of "Smart" phones where everyone shared their business with everyone else whether they wanted to hear it or not, and did not respect boundaries, so she had no choice.
But then she thought, she DID have a choice and turned her attention once more to the wonder and the magic of the sky.
The next day, the first woman awoke happy. She went out into nature and watch hummingbirds in flight. She saw two eagle mates swoop through the sky above her. She felt the glory of the trees and smelled the scent of new spring flowers.
The second woman did not leave her bed, even though the sun was shining and a whole new palette of life presented itself. She curled into a ball and repeated to herself, in an endless loop, the torment of her conversation with John.
Two women: equally loved by God and the Angels, each making a choice as to how to live this immeasurable gift of life they had been given.
And then living with the choices they had made.
